Mice mostly find their way into people’s homes via cable ducts, basement corridors or supply lines. Damage to buildings, in particular, encourages the immigration of mice. The thoughtless storage of food and supplies thus promotes mouse infestation and careless handling of the garbage.

Here you will receive information and valuable tips on how to drive away mice and which home remedies against mice are suitable to prevent immigration and the nesting of mice.

What helps against mice?

To drive away mice, you should first find out how they could get into your own home and what specifically attracted them. The first step is to eliminate possible damage and weak points such as brickwork openings, open basement windows, etc.

When it comes to what helps against mice, rethinking how you deal with food, supplies, and waste is also a question. Objective: The food sources of mice must be removed. If you observe the following tips against mice, you should at least succeed in driving away mice in the future and preventing them from developing again.

“Natural” repellants for mice

mice

One often hears about  “natural” repellants such as peppermint, mothballs or ultrasound, which are supposed to help against mice. These are positioned as miracle methods of driving mice away. In reality, however, they are entirely ineffective.

These methods could slow down an infestation but have no long-term effects.

Rats and Mice are brilliant beings. They know full well that the outside world is a great danger to animals of their size. So they settle permanently once they find a safe place with no natural enemies and plenty of food. They will even prefer to endure the presence of an ultrasonic repellant or peppermint rather than leaving their new homes.

(Home) remedies for mice

When asked what helps against mice, various (home) remedies supposed to drive away mice are repeatedly discussed. The reason is mainly that most of those affected want to avoid mouse poison in their own four walls. Therefore, we have put together the best tips and home remedies that are supposed to help against mice or are at least suspected of being able to drive them away: A guarantee for the effectiveness of the agents listed here against mice cannot be given.

  • Mothballs versus mice – does it work?

    In short: no!

Naphthalene is a strong-smelling and hard white substance. When ingested or its smell inhaled, naphthalene causes a decrease in blood oxygen. Therefore, this substance has long been regarded as an effective agent against harmful rodents.

It has been suggested that placing mothballs near mice would be enough to force them to flee. However, this method does not work:

Mothballs, which are used as a moth repellent and are available in the market, only contain a tiny dose of the product. This is enough to repel moths or other insects but is unfortunately ineffective against rats or mice. To make naphthalene a repellent against rodents, which also deserves its name, a dose must be used to be uncomfortable even for humans. But most of the time, the substance is ignored by rodents.

  • Peppermint as a repellent against mice?

It smells pleasant at home and is effective against rodents … The ideal rodent repellant?

    Not correct!

While peppermint may indeed add a pleasant smell to your home, it does not scare away rats or mice in any way.

It is believed that peppermint is a good repellent because of its pungent odour, which could interfere with the sensitive olfactory senses of rats and mice. However, be aware that if even sewers aren’t off-putting to mice and rats, the smell of peppermint won’t put them off either.

  • Cats versus mice

When we talk about mice, we immediately think of cats. The image has even become firmly imprinted on the culture and repeats itself over and over again.

If you are not allergic, you can try adopting a cat. Remember, however, that this is not a guarantee of success …

Cats are “fearsome” hunters, at least some, depending on your pet’s temperament and their surroundings. Most of the time, the mice are ignored. Why? Since domestic cats don’t have to hunt to survive, they have everything they need: plenty of food, cuddles, petting, toys, etc. You can help scare off the mice and even eliminate some of them in time if they manage to catch them. Unfortunately, in a confirmed infestation, they prove to be less effective.

  • Ultrasound against mice or rats?

You can find a whole range of anti-mouse ultrasound machines in hardware stores. You can try different sizes and brands; the result is always the same: the mice will come back!

Why is ultrasound ineffective? Because mice and rats are very adaptable. Once they become familiar with ultrasound in their environment, the rodents will gradually return.

To achieve a practical defence effect, the frequency of the devices should be increased significantly. However, this would also be quite uncomfortable for people, children, and pets.

  • What other home remedies are there to keep mice and rats away?

    • It is said to help against mice by stuffing cotton rags soaked with turpentine into mouse holes discovered. Hot cayenne pepper, which is sprinkled around the walkways, should also help to drive away mice.
    • One of peppermint similar effect chillies, cloves and oleander leave rumoured.
    • Cat litter should also help against mice. Theory: The mice’s excellent sense of smell will perceive the excretions of the main enemy cat and lead to an escape reflex and, as a result, drive the mice away. To do this, the cat litter is placed in a (not airtight) bag, then placed near the walkways and suspected nesting areas of the mice.
    • When using a trap or live traps against mice, the use of rosewood oil and peanut butter should lead to good catch results.

You have already used various remedies against mice but without success? Then, to drive away or effectively fight mice, one should rely on professional help, especially when home remedies or various (self-use) products have failed against mice.

Chasing Mice: Removing Damage to Buildings

  •  Cracks in the door – mice need only minimal attempts in the door and wall holes to penetrate the inside of the building: even pencil-thick holes of 6-7 mm are enough to squeeze through. Therefore: To drive away mice in the long term, doors should be equipped with so-called brush strips or rubber door lips.
  • Cracks and joints  – not only for energy reasons, all doors, (basement) windows and wall passages leading to the outside should be checked regularly for leaks. Defective windows should be replaced if possible. In addition, it may be necessary to consider whether stable wire grids with an appropriate mesh size are installed to secure the building against mice. Finally, to drive away mice and keep them out, the width of the wire mesh should never be more significant than 5 mm.
  • Wall and ceiling openings  – joints in areas of wall or ceiling openings between rooms and floors, especially for supply lines, should be closed and sealed with suitable materials. Pipe sleeves can also help here. Another remedy against mice is to fill them with proper metal sheets, especially in wall and ceiling openings made of wood.
  • Elevator shafts  – Elevator shafts can also be the reason for the spread of mice or rats. Rodents are excellent climbers and can even run up smooth walls. In this way, mice can spread throughout the building in no time via cable ropes, risers, etc. In addition, the area of the drive motors in elevator shafts often offers mice a relatively undisturbed area to nest.
  • Other  – There are different ways mice get inside a building. A tree approaching the building can be the reason, as can infest deliveries of goods.
